Liquid CO2-based cleaning process has proven benefits

Under the directorship of the research institute TNO Industrial Enschede, the effects of the CO2 cleaning processes were compared to conventional cleaning processes including chemical cleaning using PER or KWL and classic wet cleaning. The research project was conducted between 2001 and 2004 in Gorredijk, Holland, and the final report was published in the spring of 2005. Project partners included Linde AG and Electrolux-Wascator AB.

Result

  • Cleaning with liquid CO2 has a positive effect on textiles and extends their life by up to 30 per cent
  • Textiles retain their shape.
  • Textiles retain their colours.
  • Textiles show less soiling than after, say, conventional cleaning.
  • Textiles cleaned using CO2 smell fresh and clean.
  • The process is free from environmental pollution such as residues in water or air.
  • Staff involved in the process have healthier working conditions.
This research project received second prize in the European Commission's 2006 EU-Life Award for its significance with respect to environmental policy.
